If you are going to make the purchase for the next two weeks, we tell you what are the recommendations of the experts about what we should buy and what not

The coronavirus crisis has triggered mass hysteria, and we have witnessed it with the images of queues and empty shelves in supermarkets, which have only expanded the fear of a shortage of basic necessities in Spain.

Although the reaction to the fear of the unknown is normal, since it is simply a psychological reaction, the truth is that large stores have already reported that there will not be such a shortage.

Experts recommend that we all do the voluntary quarantine, whether we are infected or not, in order to avoid the spread of the coronavirus

However, and given the recommendations of the experts that all of us stay at home, whether we are infected or not, in order to avoid the spread of the virus that has already infected 3,000 people in Spain and killed 86, it is good to fill out the pantry smartly to 1) save money and 2) avoid going outside to make unnecessary purchases.

Let us remember that each of us can be infected with Covid-19 and not know it , and exposing ourselves to others and in outdoor places is a risk for society , since we can infect someone belonging to the risk group without wanting to, which it can end your life.

The best foods to buy before the coronavirus quarantine

The matter is serious, so if you can do the voluntary quarantine at home, we will all appreciate it. Before going home and not going out, yes, you have to get a good arsenal of food. With the help of the recommendations of the Official College of Dietitians-Nutritionists of the Valencian Community (CODiNuCoVa), we are going to tell you what is the best you can buy:

1) Vegetables: cauliflower, red cabbage, carrots and onions

In the first place, experts recommend perishable foods: “Although it is advisable to buy as little of this type as possible, we find vegetables that endure a long time and very well over time. This is the case of cabbage, cauliflower, red cabbage, carrots or onions, "says Paula Crespo, president of CODiNuCoVa.

We would discard broccoli from this list and also foods such as lettuce or tomatoes. And very important: we must keep these vegetables out of the fridge, since they last much longer outside, although we have the habit of refrigerating them.

2) Non-climacteric fruits

Regarding fruits, food professionals distinguish between climacteric and non-climacteric fruits. The difference lies in the ripening process. The former is those whose maturation process does not end at harvest and, therefore, last less time in our kitchens. This is the case of banana, apple and pear, which we should not buy in quarantine.

On the other side of the scale are the fruits called "non-climacteric” which are the ones they recommend buying. Are:

  • Tangerines and oranges.
  •
  •
  • Cherries
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •
  • Some fruits
  • Some Gtres fruits

3) Vegetables and pot vegetables

When it comes to making a good pantry that lasts as long as possible, it is advisable to buy non-perishable foods in greater quantity or with processes that extend their useful life.

"These are foods that are already cooked, such as legumes or vegetables in a can or glass jar, which also have a long-term expiration date, or those that can be bought raw, such as dried legumes or rice", advises Luis Cabañas, secretary of the Official College of Dietitians-Nutritionists.

Pasta made with refined flours is not included in this list, since they do not contribute anything from a nutritional point of view.

4) Preserves

It is also advisable to buy cans and preserves, such as tuna, sardines or mollusks, since they do not take up hardly any volume, do not require refrigeration and their expiration date is far in time. Of course, experts recommend that they always be with virgin olive oil, avoiding refined oils, or failing that, natural.

5) Nuts

Other more satisfying foods such as nuts, pickles or the corn kernel to make homemade popcorn, could be good options to store.

6) Frozen non-precooked

Nutritionists give free rein to frozen foods, as long as they are not precooked or rich in salt or poor quality fats. Frozen fish and meat, frozen vegetables or frozen fruit are a good substitute for fresh food as it preserves all its nutritional properties, but not a pizza or fish sticks.

7) Unfermented dairy

With regard to dairy, you can buy several liters in brick if you have had thermal processes such as UHT, but it is not convenient to stock large quantities of fermented dairy, such as yogurt or cheese, since they require refrigeration and may not fit.

8) Eggs

Other foods such as eggs are a good option, since they can be stored for several days outside or in the refrigerator.
