Great progress has been made during, the last 50 years, in our attempts to control blood pressure (BP) in the population and in particular in hypertensive patients. First, physicians noticed that very strict control of salt intake was able to decrease BP significantly even in so-called malignant hypertension; this was followed by a continuous search to finding antihypertensive drugs: different classes were detected each having a specific mechanism; careful well designed controlled studies have proven their efficacy. Recently, new techniques have been developed like renal nerve ablation and stimulation of baroreceptors.
